Is it me, or are there more and more motorcycles on our highways?
I did some cursory research and discovered that sales of new motorcycles surpassed the one million mark milestone in 2004. Sales were higher in 2005. While stats aren’t yet available for 2006, motorcycle sales are expected to rise as fuel prices top $3.00 a gallon.
But because motorcycles can reach high speeds and
offer little protection, they are among the most dangerous
vehicles on the highway. Studies have shown that motorcycles
have the highest crash cost per person per mile. Since
1997, the number of fatalities resulting from motorcycle-involved
accidents has increased more than 40 percent, and the
number of motorcycle injuries has risen too.
Here's some food for thought about motorcycle accidents:
- About three fourths of motorcycle accidents involved a collision with another vehicle, mostly passenger automobiles
- One-fourth involved the motorcycle colliding with another object
- Inattention, inadequate training and speeding were common factors
- Many cyclists did not have a license or had their license revoked
