Summer is a time when many of us take to the highways. As I was planning a family road trip recently, I ran across some startling statistics.
According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, Memorial Day through Labor Day is among the most dangerous and deadliest times of year to travel the nation’s highways. One primary reason is a significant jump in alcohol-related traffic crashes and fatalities.
Another major cause, it seems, is speeding. About a third of all traffic fatalities involve speeding, the highest number since 1991 (41 percent of the speeding drivers were legally intoxicated).
Marry these stats with the alarming number of drivers who are uninsured (about 30 percent, according to the California Department of Insurance), and it is a good idea to have ample uninsured motorist coverage for you and your family.
While you might be the safest driver on the road, you cannot control other drivers. In California, if you are injured in an auto accident by a drunk driver, he or she may be subject to punitive damages. We have helped many clients negotiate for fair compensation for vehicle damages, bodily injuries, time lost from work, pain and suffering, and out-of-pocket expenses.
I hope you are enjoying your summer. Travel safely!
